The Kraft Family

Dustin and Cassandra Kraft found their new “home away from home” at Ronald McDonald House® shortly after welcoming their fifth child, Wesley, into the world.  At 14 weeks premature, Wesley could fit inside the palm of your hand weighing only 2 pounds and 2 ounces.  This extremely small and fragile baby boy battled daily for his life.

Only eight days after being born, Wesley became sick with staph epi pneumonia.  The pneumonia eventually led to his PDA valve being reopened in his heart, causing it to be extremely hard for him to breathe. Wesley required high amounts of oxygen from a ventilator in order to sustain sufficient oxygen levels in his premature body.

When Dustin and Cassandra heard the news about Wesley, they knew they would need a place to stay until he was in recovery.  Being hours away from home was only one of the struggles that this family of seven was facing.  They turned to the Ronald McDonald House® for a safe and comfortable place to stay.

“We are so thankful for the Ronald McDonald House.  We would have made it work to be here with Wesley, but having a place to stay close to the hospital makes being away from our home easier.  Thank you,” said Dustin.

Today, Wesley continues to grow but still has to battle daily. Three months later, Wesley weighed 8 pounds and 5 ounces. He was transferred to the Kansas City hospital and had a feeding tube placed so he can feed properly.  They spent Thanksgiving in their “Ronald McDonald home away from home.”His father was thrilled when the family was able to come home the week after Thanksgiving.  During the holiday season, the Kraft family was so thankful for Wesley’s health as he continued to grow.

“Wesley is our miracle child,” said Dustin as tears filled his eyes.  “He’s a fighter.”
